What is a lithium ion flow battery?

A lithium-ion flow battery is a flow battery that uses a form of lightweight lithium as its charge carrier. The flow battery stores energy separately from its system for discharging. The amount of energy it can store is determined by tank size; its power density is determined by the size of the reaction chamber.

How much does a lithium battery cost?

A study by the U.S. Department of Energy (2017) estimates LIB pack cost between $250/kWh - $300/kWh in 2016. Findings by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) found the price of LIB packs at $273/kWh in 2016 and in the case study of a battery production plant in Korea, a price drop to $162/kWh in 2017 and $74/kWh in 2030 is forecasted (Curry, 2017).

Are flow batteries better than lithium ion batteries?

Whereas lithium-ion batteries can deliver big amounts of energy in a short period of time (1 to 2 hours), flow batteries have much less power density. That means they are better at delivering a consistent amount of less energy over a longer period of time (up to 10 hours).

What is the cost of a flow battery?

Flow batteries like the one developed by ESS could cost $200 per kWh or less by 2025. Importantly, adding more storage capacity to cover longer interruptions at a solar or wind plant may not require purchasing an entirely new battery. Flow batteries only require additional electrolyte, which in ESS’s case can cost as little as $20 per kilowatt hour.
